Zoom Recordings: to the Cloud, or Computer? A Discussion
The decision whether to record a Zoom class session or lesson “to the Cloud” or to the local computer is not one to be taken lightly. Our institutional Zoom account has a ceiling on the amount of recordings that can be stored.
Should I record my class sessions?
This is actually a loaded question. The instructor is the best one to make that decision, but it is how you record the session, not whether, that is the real question to consider. There are two options:
- Record to the Cloud, or
- Record to the Computer.
It is a serious choice. As of this date, we have used up 5% of our institutional Zoom account’s allotment of two terabytes (two thousand gigabytes). At that rate of consumption we will be using up our space and incurring additional costs within the academic year.
If you are recording to your computer, that space is not affected. You will be able to find the video on your computer and upload it to Canvas Studio, with confidence that there will be no space limitation. But it does take time to upload long videos of class sessions; whereas, by recording to the Cloud you simply point the students in that direction. Very easy and convenient, but, again, with future issues of limitations.
